If nothing else it’s fun to say the word, “KAIZEN”. It is Japanese for “Improvement”. It is made up of two words, “CHANGE” and “GOOD”
In manufacturing a Kaizen Event is a short, intense period of time, where a team of employees focus all of their energy and talent on one specific topic for improvement. Done correctly they are incredibly successful. The key is correctly. With the proper facilitator, Kaizen Events provide great improvements for businesses in all areas.
As I said, done correctly is the key. Ebsco has hired a consultant that specializes in facilitating these Kaizen Events. We received grant money to pay for their services. So here we go!
Our Kaizen events will be one week-long. The team will consist of three to four people who deal directly with the topic and two to three from other areas that do not. The people from the outside of the topic will offer unique views to the conversation. They have no ownership of the process and will be completely unbiased.
Our facilitator is there to teach the team the process and guide them along the way. They are not there to provide any answers, just to lead our team to the root cause and solutions.
We will have one Kaizen Event a month for the next four months. The first two will focus on set up times. The third is tentatively slated to look at reducing and improving our job travelers. The fourth is yet to be named.
I am very excited about these. It takes a huge commitment. Taking five to seven team members out of production for an entire week is costly. We are anticipating the results will cover the cost many times over. It takes commitment to follow through on their findings and then maintain the discipline to continue it. Ebsco has the commitment!
This is another opportunity for our great team to show why they are so great. I have always had confidence in them and will back them 100% in these events.
Stay tuned, I will be reporting on some of the results in future blogs.
So for now “KAIZEN!”
