We have started a major initiative at Ebsco, 5S. 5S is an organizational program to increase productivity and reduce waste. The original five S’s are in Japanese but in English they are interpreted as:
Sort Remove things you do not need an a regular basis
Set in Order Organize the things you do need regularly in an organized fashion
Shine CLEAN everything
Standardize Create a system that makes your improvements the new standard
Sustain Create a system to maintain the new standard
We just started the first S, Sort last week. In this process everyone goes through their area looking for items they do not need there and moves them into a holding area to decide final disposition. WOW!!!! Where did we get all this STUFF? The team did great digging out things from every corner. This part of the program will be a major clean up for Ebsco. We may need a roll-off container next week just to dispose of un-needed junk. Where was it all? I don’t remember seeing it. We will end up with a major sale on Craig’s List of just excess desks and file cabinets. They’re everywhere.
The first week results are very encouraging. I am amazed at all of the things I walked past daily and didn’t even see. The mind becomes accustomed and over-looks so many things. Nice job Ebsco Team.
This is something you can try at home. Pick an area and just dig in. You might find a buried treasure. I’m sure you’ll find a few things you don’t need.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to organize my desk, everywhere is included.
