The Cardinals clinched their division and the Dallas Cowboys won yesterday. The only thing that could be better is if the OU Sooners didn’t have an off week this weekend. TEAMS. I recently coached an Ebsco Softball Team. We put the team together to play in a benefit tournament. With only a few weeks to practice we spent our lunch break, everyday outside playing ball. We lost game one against a team loaded with College baseball and softball players. We were coming back in the game but ran out of time. To the loser’s bracket. We swept the losers bracket, made the final facing you know who, the team we lost to in the first game. We were determined. The winner won the tournament. The game was back and forth but the effort from our team was unmatched and we won! We won the tournament. I was so proud of the Ebsco TEAM.
TEAM. Teams are the perfect representation of synergy. The Team is greater than the sum of its parts. People with less talent can defeat other teams by playing together. It’s true in sports and in life. A workplace, church, organization, any group of individuals with common goals can be teams. As humans we strive to belong. Being a part of a team gives purpose and meaning to a one’s actions.
Some of the most powerful and influential teams today are the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. They are teams. Their actions influence the world. WOW! The ultimate teams. But wait, do those who serve understand what team they are playing for? When elected to these prestigious teams, members don’t realize what team they play for. They just got picked up in the majors but still wear their minor league uniforms. They still try to play for their minor league teams. They symbolically wear jerseys with Elephants and Donkeys on them, one group red and one group blue. They played for these teams in the minor leagues to get elected. They are in the majors now but still wear their old minor league jerseys. I want to scream “Don’t you get it? YOU MADE IT! You’re in the majors now.” But they wouldn’t listen. They still swear their allegiance to an Elephant and a Donkey instead of their new managers, the American People. We try to put together a winning team but year after year they still refuse to play for our team. With their heart, drive and team work, our Ebsco team above could run circles around our Congress.
If our congressional representatives would ever realize they have made it to the major league and begin playing as a team, the future of the United States would be amazing. If we can convince OUR players that they no longer play for Elephants and Donkeys but for the greatest team ever assembled and wear the jersey of the United States of America their accomplishments would be endless. So Mr. and Ms. Senator and Representative, this is your manager speaking. Go start warming up with ALL of your team members and get ready to play the greatest game of your life. If you don’t, I’m sending you back to the minors and you can wear that damn Donkey and Elephant shirt all day.
If you’ll excuse me I need to go work on my starting lineup
