Yesterday was the first day of Summer. I know it was because the meteorologist on TV said so.
So what does this mean?
I know, summer is hot so yesterday should have been our first hot day. Well it was hot but it has been hot here in Oklahoma for a few weeks. Guess Mother Nature doesn’t pay attention to things like that.
OK, Schools out in the Summer. The kids must have started summer break yesterday. No, they have been out for a few weeks now.
Well there is swimming. You go swimming in the summer so the pools opened yesterday. No, they opened on Memorial day weekend.
It’s the first day of summer, doesn’t it mean anything?
In America we have days and weeks for everything. Today is National Onion Ring Day and National Chocolate Eclair Day. Wonder if they have a National Day for other flavored Eclairs?. We celebrate National Color TV day and Waffle Iron Day. Now I have no problem with Waffle Irons or eclairs BUT a National Day?
To the optimist the first day of summer means pride in the lawn you keep, swimming pools and trips to the beach or in Oklahoma to the lake (If there is no e coli). We think of BBQ and family get togethers and all of the fun things that go with summers. I think of warm nights sitting outside watching hundreds of firefly’s putting on a show. Tree frogs providing a musical accompaniment for their dance. A cooling breeze blowing through the trees as the leaves sign a soft background for it all.
For those of us that get to experience the four seasons. it is a blessing. To watch Mother Nature perform her transitions for all of us to enjoy. The dates for these transitions are not followed by Mother Nature. The dates are created by meteorologist to recognize the change. It is based in science but symbolic to you and I.
I think it is sad that we recognize and pay tribute to so many small things and ignore one of the greatest events we experience. The changing of the seasons. Our lives and activities are so closely matched to the seasons yet we can’t take a day to pay tribute to them. So next time we change seasons, Fall my favorite season, take a moment to appreciate what it means. The changing of the seasons is much more than a cute picture on the weatherman’s forecast.
Now if you will excuse me, I’m going to set out on the deck and enjoy the second day of summer.
